Managing Your Mental Health: Why Movement Can Be the Key Ingredient

Last month, I posted a video about mental health on Instagram with a cover picture of me upset. I think it’s fair to say it went VIRAL! Almost 2,000 views and counting….

Mental Health

I’d like to watch it, take me there!

Want to keep reading – here’s the short version of what you missed?

In the video, I talk about a client, who is unfortunately not the first, nor the last to come to SKPT with a story of their battle to improve their situation and try to get some help with their motivation whilst battling their mental health.

So why is difficulty with our mental health such an uncomfortable thing to say you’re experiencing, yet the video has been watched so many times?

As the leader of a successful 6 figure business, people might be led to believe that I never have a bad day, never experience moments of crisis and don’t have any experience with managing my own mental health. If you think that, I’m sorry to say you couldn’t be further from the truth.

Anxiety, depression, PTSD, eating disorders, loss, grief, stress, the list is endless and unfortunately quite common. In the UK, Major depression is thought to be the second leading cause of disability worldwide and a major contributor to the burden of suicide and ischemic heart disease. It is estimated that 1 in 6 people in the past week experienced a common mental health problem (Mental Health.org).

In a study including 48 countries, males have consistently reported higher self-esteem than females (Otten et al, 2021). Stats show approximately 68% of women and 57% of men with mental health problems are parents (Mental Health.org).

So what can exercise do for my mental health?

Another piece of research showed exercise improves mental health by reducing anxiety, depression, and negative mood and by improving self-esteem and can give us a massive brain boost. Exercise has also been found to alleviate symptoms such as low self-esteem and social withdrawal.
